Warren Central played six solid innings and one disastrous one on Wednesday.
Brandon scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie, and went on to beat the Lady Vikes 8-0. Brandon, which had just three hits in the first six innings, got 10 in the seventh and sent 13 batters to the plate.
The first run was scored on a botched rundown, but the Lady Bulldogs (15-2) later strung together seven straight hits to blow it open. Amber McBroom had two hits in the inning and finished 4-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored.
“We played good, tight defense and got rattled on that rundown. Then all of a sudden they got a few good hits,” WC coach Lucy Young said, adding that her team’s lack of hitting also led to its downfall. WC managed just four hits and was shut out by Brandon for the second time this season. “Our not hitting the ball has been the same song with a different verse every game. We’ve hit one time all year. We’ve done every drill we can do. We even neglect defense to work on batting.”
With the game tied in the seventh, Amber Adcock led off with a single and McBroom followed with a hit to the gap in right center. Adcock stopped at third, but McBroom didn’t stop at second and nearly ran past her teammate. When the relay throw home caught McBroom in no man’s land, the Lady Vikes joined her. They caught her in a rundown, all the while keeping a wary eye on Adcock, until Adcock finally broke for the plate. Shortstop Sydnei Smith made a wild throw home, allowing Adcock to score the go-ahead run.
McBroom then scored on a single by Katie Caldwell to make it 2-0.
Moments later, the floodgates opened. Seven consecutive two-out hits — all singles — blew the game open in the blink of an eye.
WC will return to action today against Northwest Rankin at Lucy Young Field. The start of the varsity game has been moved to 5 p.m. because of the threat of rain.
