Charles Richard Jacobson

Charles Richard “Dick” Jacobson died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at his residence in Vicksburg at the age of 90.
He was born Jan. 9, 1919, to the late Harry A. Jacobson and Jean Gillan Jacobson. Mr. Jacobson graduated from Carr Central High School and attended Mississippi State University. He had a distinguished military career, having served more than eight years in the U.S. Army, as a member of Company B. 106th Combat Engineer Regiment, of the 31st Infantry, “Dixie” Division and various other units. Shortly after Pearl Harbor he served almost three years in Europe. Mr. Jacobson was the commanding officer of the 9th U.S. Army Photo Interpretation Detachment, receiving the Bronze Star Citation for his service.
After the war, he returned to Vicksburg where he worked for almost 15 years as a mechanical engineer with the R.G. LeTourneau Co. and 20 years with the AMAX Company, in Vicksburg, Salem, Mo., and New Orleans. He retired in 1981.
In 1988, he returned to Vicksburg. While in Vicksburg he was a member of the Co. B 106th Engineer Association, the Shoney’s Breakfast Club, former Junior Warden of The Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal, and for many years prior to his death, an active parishioner of Christ Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Russell Guchereau Jacobson; two daughters, Miriam Jacobson Emerson and her husband, Lee, of Vicksburg, and Sandra Jacobson Cooper and her husband, Jerry, of Gulfport; stepdaughters Alice Guchereau Portwood and Pamela Guchereau Melsheimer, both of Vicksburg; a son, Ronald Keith Jacobson and his wife, Felicia Jones Jacobson, of Vicksburg; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; two brothers, Wallace G. Jacobson of Forest, Miss., and Robert T. Jacobson of Austin, Texas.
Mr. Jacobson was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Armstrong Jacobson; a son: Harry A. Jacobson; and two sisters, Elizabeth J. Trampe and Delnia J. Tonjes.
Pallbearers will be Messrs. Jesse Jacobson, David Emerson, Kevin Emerson, Karl Emerson, Joe Grayson, Ross Melsheimer, Robert Portwood and Jeff Portwood.
Honorary pallbearers will be all the surviving members of Company B, 106th Engineer Association, members of The Shoney’s Breakfast Club and Mr. Joe McNamara.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Riles Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, at Christ Episcopal Church with visitation prior to the service at 9:30 a.m.
