• To celebrate National Dog Week, Deputy Brad Redditt visited with Zeus, a drug and rescue dog. Dr. Rachel Potter, Animal Medical Clinic, talked to children about the proper care of dogs. Trainer Jo Beth Britt shared her therapy dogs.

• After learning about ladybug habitats, Gloria Sullivan’s kindergarten painted ladybugs and made booklets.

• Shannon Bell’s pre-kindergartners read “A Color of His Own” and fingerpainted chameleons to blend into a patterned background sheet.

• Three-year-old students of Lynnette Smith and Teri Conerly painted fall leaves as part of their study of the seasons. Bo Campbell was named Student of the Week.

• Kari Dupree’s toddlers dot-painted puppies to celebrate National Dog Week.

 

Hawkins Preschool

Little People’s Learning Center

• Fourth-graders identified latitude and longitude and used a compass to practice map skills.

• Students in the 2- and 3-year-old preschool class visited the Russell C. Davis Planetarium in Jackson.

• Four-year-old pre-kindergartners created hand-tracing flowers as gifts for Grandparent’s Day.

• Kindergartners celebrated Grandparent’s Day with lunch and a music presentation about character and friendship. They presented grandparents with bookmarks featuring a poem.

• First-graders made and displayed paper-bag picture books as part of a study of the five senses.

Vicksburg Catholic

• St. Francis students celebrated Mercy Day Mass with the Rev. Patrick Farrell. Guests were Sisters Theresa Finnegan, Paulinus Oakes and Fatima Starks. Mayor Paul Winfield spoke and declared Mercy Day. Former principal Peter Pikul was a guest speaker. Following the Mass, a magnolia tree and plaque were dedicated in honor of Sister Cabrini Fagan.

• Liz Fletcher’s sixth-grade religion classes created and displayed before-and-after cartoons as part of a “Keeping Sunday Holy” project.

• Overall winners for the QSP magazine sale were Grace Sudderth, first place and winner of a Nintendo DSI; Madison Willis, second place and winner of a portable DVD player; and Eliot Norris, third place and winner of a portable CD player. Shelley Nosser’s fourth grade won a pizza party and no-uniform day as the top-selling class. Nosser received gift cards to Rusty’s and Walmart as the top-selling teacher.

• Kindergarten classes of Zena Phillips and Lori Tzotzolas participated in Silly Hat Day after a study of the letter H. They also hosted a tea party after a study of manners and the letter T.

• Fourth-grade students of Shelley Nosser and Martha Amborn wrote and illustrated bio poems. They also constructed accordion books as part of a cause-and-effect study.

Vicksburg High

• A representative from Educational Service Foundation  will be at the school Oct. 9 to speak to seniors about college preparations.

• Seniors planning to attend the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall may apply for the Luckyday Foundation Citizenship Scholarship through the Guidance Office.

• Teetee Braxton’s all-girl, fourth-grade class constructed a portrait about a paragraph they had written using common and proper nouns. The students enjoyed donuts and cupcakes after reading “Bakers Neighbor.” They made kites, wrote a Constitution rap and used newspaper articles to construct alliteration, assonance, synonym, antonym, onomatopoeia and rhyme suitcases for their “education trip.” Officer Rick Jordan spoke to Rebecca Flanagan’s third-grade class about Warren County laws as a part of Constitution Week. • Legacy motivational speakers Sharonda Medina and Kim Stribling spoke to child development  classes about lifetime goals and choices.

• The school’s annual Beauty and Beau Pageant will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 in the school auditorium. Eligible students must pay a $30 entry fee to Ginger Ehrhardt by Friday to participate.

• The PSAT exam for 10th- and 11th-graders will be administered Oct. 14. Students must register in the Guidance Office by Oct. 9; cost is $13.

Warren Central Intermediate

• Art students created Halloween decorations for the hallways.

• Christina Cochran’s students hosted a popcorn party after reading “All That Corn.” Katlyn Caponis, Riley Wilkerson and Lavadist Lewis won the class Math Bee. First-graders will visit a pumpkin patch on Oct. 8.
