MADISON — To take a page from 1990s video game Mortal Kombat, it was a flawless victory.

Madison Central blasted Warren Central 49-0 on Friday thanks to five touchdowns by quarterback Peyton Johnson, who threw for three scores and rushed for two more.

The Jaguar defensive line held WC to 139 total yards and dominated the game.

“Their defensive line was the whole key,” said WC running back Tim Jones, who had 82 yards on 15 carries. “I kept getting through the line and couldn’t go anywhere.”

Offensively, Madison Central racked up 318 total yards.

The victory all but wrapped up the Region 2-6A title for the Jaguars (7-0, 3-0 Region 2-6A). None of their last four region opponents has a winning record.

However, all is not lost for Warren Central (4-3, 2-1). The challenge is making the playoffs and it can lock up a home playoff game by winning out.

“We didn’t expect it to happen in that fashion,” WC coach Curtis Brewer said. “We knew we had to play a perfect game to win. We didn’t play a perfect game, needless to say. But the challenge that lies ahead of us is more important than what lies behind us.”

After the Jaguars took a 21-0 lead on a 2-yard run by Johnson and a pair of TD passes by Johnson to Josh Crowder and Tobias Singleton, the Vikings finally showed signs of life. Jones reeled off a 55-yard run to set Warren Central up in Madison territory.

But the drive stalled and the Vikings were forced to settle for a long field goal. Richard Lankston blasted through the line and blocked the kick. Jawaan Luckett recovered it off the carom and raced 57 yards for the touchdown to put the Jaguars up 28-0 at the break.

“I thought at that point, Warren Central still had hope,” Madison Central coach Bobby Hall said. “But I thought at that point, they lost hope.”

In the second half, it was more of the same.

Xavien Griffin returned the second-half kickoff 80 yards, and two plays later Johnson went in from five yards off left tackle for his second rushing touchdown. Will Bryan had a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter and Elliott Carson went 42 yards in the fourth to complete the scoring for the Jaguars.

Tallulah Aca. 28,

Union Christian 0

Jes Shivers scored two touchdowns and the Tallulah Academy defense posted a shutout as the Trojans won big over Union Christian Friday night.

Shivers scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards as the Trojans went up 12-0. Cody Issac had a two-point conversion run to make it 14-0.

Tallulah (6-2) put the game away with two scores in the fourth quarter when Issac scored on a 49-yard run while Cody Landrem scampered 71 yards for the final touchdown. Landrem’s two-point pass to Cody Petty capped the scoring.

Landrem finished with 134 yards on nine carries.

The Trojan defense held Union Christian to just 33 yards of total offense, including 29 rushing.

Hinds AHS 33,

Enterprise 0

Jeremy Lee ran for 170 yards and a score and added a 35-yard interception return for another to lead the War Dawgs (5-2, 1-1 Region 6-2A) to a victory.

Lee was the big reason. Besides his rushing feats, he also had nine receptions for 119 yards, four tackles and the interception return. He opened the scoring on an 82-yard run.

Keeslee Stewart had three touchdowns for the War Dawgs. He caught a 35-yard TD pass from Javonte Robinson and also scored on runs of 10 and 3 yards. Jamario Funches had a pair of PAT kicks.

Stewart ended with 40 yards rushing and 35 receiving. Robinson had a career game passing going 10-of-21 for 157 yards.

“We passed more than I have ever have,” Hinds AHS coach Michael Fields said.

Jimmy White paced the defense with eight tackles and two sacks.

Briarfield 40,

G’ville Christian 15

Briarfield had 401 yards in total offense to break away from the Greenville Christian Saints Friday night in Lake Providence.

Quarterback Joseph Hopkins ran for 110 yards and two TDs on runs of 2 and 1 yard. Hopkins also threw a 33-yard TD pass to Ridge Creech.  Creech also caught a 25-yard pass from Justin Gardner to give him two catches for 58 yards.

Briarfield led 6-3 after Creech’s first score. Hopkins’ 2-yard run followed by a 35-yard fumble return and score by Lane Robertson made it 21-3. Creech’s second TD catch put the Rebels up 27-9 at the half.

The Saints closed it to 27-15 but the Rebels got scores from Hopkins and Gardner to win 40-15.

Gardner finished with 92 yards rushing and a TD pass while Blake Lovell ran for 93 yards. As a team, Briarfield ran for 348 yards.

Briarfield (6-1) will play at Clinton Christian next Friday night.
