Miracle of Miracles|Mother thrown from car, delivers A’Myhracle

About four hours after a wreck threw her through the back window of a car, Quinshayla Powell delivered her baby at University Medical Center in Jackson.

It was something of a miracle, and, appropriately, a UMC nurse suggested a name for the 6-pound, 12-ounce little girl: A’Myhracle, born with no injuries after a four-car accident on a stormy night.

Powell was a passenger in a Volvo headed east on Sherman Avenue to River Region Medical Center on Oct. 13 because she was in labor three weeks ahead of her due date.

Her friend Callie Brown was driving, and in her haste ran a red light at U.S. 61 North.

A northbound Dodge Ram driven by Shondrick Tucker struck the Volvo, which was also occupied by Powell’s 1-year-old daughter, Ja’Mya Rose, and another friend, Jontaye Jones. After the initial collision, Brown’s vehicle hit a stopped Chevrolet pickup driven by Billy Brown.

“(Tucker) said he couldn’t slow down, and (Brown) couldn’t slow down. I flew out of a window!” Powell said, still amazed a week later.

Tucker’s vehicle was also struck by a northbound Ford Expedition driven by Patricia Adcock.

Billy Brown, who saw the pregnant mother fly from the vehicle, could not sleep before going to see her at UMC, Powell said.

“He was really nice. I like him,” she said. “He told me everything because I didn’t know anything.”

No one else was hospitalized after the wreck, which, by coincidence was near the entrance to River Regional Medical Center.

Powell said she hit her forehead and was dazed and confused.

“The last thing I remember — I looked at my Ja’Mya. I was saying something to her,” said Powell. “Then I woke up in a hospital.”

Her father, Anthony Powell, said X-rays at River Region indicated Powell had a fractured pelvis, and she was immediately rushed to UMC where more X-rays showed more fractures.

After an emergency surgery to deliver A’Myhracle, doctors found no breaks in Powell’s pelvis, and her father believes prayer from his co-workers at Ameristar casino and family and friends from West Palm Beach, Fla. to Indianapolis, Ind., made the difference.

The mother returned home Saturday afternoon with stitches in her forehead and bruises on her body.

“When I saw her, she had a big gash,” Anthony Powell said pointing to his own forehead. “So I gave her a kiss.”

Powell said she had no worries about A’Myhracle’s well-being during the ordeal but was more concerned about little Ja’Mya who received a few scratches.

Ja’Mya’s and A’Myhracle’s father, Jermaine Rose, said he, too, was most worried about the toddler immediately after the wreck.

“I was scared and quiet,” he said.
