Copiah-Lincoln Community College comes to Raymond Saturday afternoon to close out the season against Hinds Community College, but one Wolves player who won’t be making the trip is former Vicksburg High and Mississippi State wide receiver Delmon Robinson.
Robinson was dismissed from Co-Lin after the team’s fifth game for undisclosed reasons.
Co-Lin coach Glenn Davis confirmed Tuesday that Robinson is no longer on the team but did not give a reason.
“Delmon is not with us now,” Davis said.
Robinson, a three-time All-Warren County wide receiver/running back for the Gators, played last year with Mississippi State where he saw action in 11 games and caught 12 passes for 125 yards and returned eight kicks for 134 yards.
Robinson was one of the most vocal defenders of former Bulldogs’ coach Sylvester Croom following State’s 45-0 loss to Ole Miss which led to Croom’s resignation the next day.
Under first year coach Dan Mullen, Robinson was expected to play a big part in the Bulldog offense this fall, but during the summer, Robinson left Mississippi State for undisclosed reasons. He transferred to Co-Lin in order to maintain his playing eligibility for his sophomore season. By making the transfer back to a junior college. Robinson would be able to re-sign with another Football Championship Subdivision (Division I) school for his junior and senior seasons.
Things went well for the first five weeks. Davis said Robinson was having a productive season with the Wolves.
“He was leading us in receiving and was doing a fine job for us in the return game, too,” Davis said.
In five games, Robinson led the Wolves (5-3, 3-2 MACJC South Division) with 20 catches for 247 yards. He also had another 225 yards in kickoff returns.
As for his future, that remains to be seen, since he has left two football teams in the matter of just four months.
Two former Warren Central players have also made an impact with Co-Lin and will suit up for Saturday’s 2 p.m. game with Hinds (3-5, 1-4). Bennie Peoples, a defensive stalwart for the Vikings in 2006-07, is starter on the Wolves’ offensive line. Davis said the 275-pound Peoples has impressed and will be playing at the senior college level next fall.
“Bennie is having a good year. There are several schools with an interest in him,” Davis said.
Warren Central line coach Buddy Wooten said he is not surprised that Peoples made the switch from the defensive line to offense.
“When Bennie was here, he started off as our center. But he just proved himself to be a really good defensive end for us,” Wooten said.
Another former Viking, Joe Harris, has found a place as a backup linebacker and special teamer. Harris led the Vikings in tackles last season.
“Joe has done well playing on special teams,” Davis said.
Co-Lin will play a Hinds team coached by Gene Murphy, who returned to the sidelines after a six-year hiatus.
One of Robinson’s former teammates, Les Lemons, keys the Hinds attack at quarterback. Lemons has completed 37 of 60 passes for 357 yards and three TDs. He came back Sunday after missing the last two games with a sprained knee. Cordell Valentine, a former WC receiver, has come on in the last three weeks and has seven receptions for 133 yards.
