One by one, car burglaries were discovered in Marion Park subdivision off Cain Ridge Road Monday morning until the total was 14.
The reports began at 3:53 a.m. after a woman saw two young men run from her vehicle, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.
“Once police arrived on scene, they started doing a neighborhood check and noticed other vehicles had been broken into,” he said. “They started going door to door” alerting residents. In all or almost all cases, car doors had been left unlocked in driveways or on the street.
All along the 300 and the 500 blocks of Warren Street, cash and guns were among items reported stolen.
The first reports were of a purse valued at $150 stolen from a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and an XM radio valued at $150 missing from a 2005 Nissan Altima, Stewart said.
At 7:26 a.m., a Ruger .22-caliber handgun valued at $250 and Remington 1911 .45-caliber handgun valued at $450 were reported stolen from a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado, and an Olympus digital camera valued at $200 was missing from a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado.
A 2003 Buick Century, 2008 Honda Ridgeline and a 2007 Chevrolet Impala were reported ransacked at about 5:30 that morning, Stewart said.
In the 300 and 500 blocks of Longview Street, a cell phone and an iPod were reported missing in five burglaries.
Stewart said a Sony Slider cell phone valued at $200 and an Apple iPod valued at $100 were reported missing from a 1997 Dodge Stratus at 5 a.m., and about $5 was reported stolen from a 2005 Nissan Maxima a little more than an hour later.
Although a 2005 Dodge Intrepid, a 2002 Lincoln Town Car and a 2004 Buick were entered at about the same time, nothing was reported missing.
Stewart said cash was reported stolen during two burglaries in the 600 block of Santa Rosa at about 6 a.m.
About $100 was reported stolen from a 2002 Oldsmobile, and the glovebox of a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado was reported emptied minutes earlier. The owner of the Silverado could not determine what was missing.
No amount of money was too small for the thieves. Three dollars was reported missing from a 1997 Honda Accord in the 300 block of Warren Street.
“We’re encouraging citizens to please lock their doors,” said Stewart.
