Few voters turn out

Voters were scarce this morning at precincts deciding contests for justice court in the Southern District and Election Commission in District 5.

“We’ve had just two people,” poll manager Kathryn Osborn said of the opening minutes of voting at Carpenters Local 303 on U.S. 61 South.

Voters should have a quick entrance and exit with the light ballot, Osborn said.

“You just vote for your one person and you’re out of the way and gone,” Osborn said.

Twelve of Warren County’s 22 precincts are open for the voting to decide whether Jeff Crevitt, 46, Lisa Anglin Counts, 43, or Sally Sheffield McDaniel, 41, will fill the justice court post held by Crevitt’s father until his death. Crevitt, a former Warren County deputy, was appointed on an interim basis.

District 5 Election Commissioner Lonnie Wooley, also serving by appointment, is opposed by challenger Gordon Cordes to represent the district on the elections panel.

“It’s supposed to be light,” poll manager Sandra Atkins said, adding no one had shown up to vote in the first 40 minutes of voting at Vicksburg Junior High School.

The justice court winner will serve through the 2011 county and statewide election cycle. A runoff is set for Nov. 24 if no candidate receives a majority of votes. Precincts in the Southern District are spread over four of five Warren County supervisor districts.

The winner in the election commission race will serve through the 2012 presidential election cycle. All voters in the southeast Warren County district’s five precincts will choose a candidate.

A special election for justice court judge is set for next year’s election cycle. Supervisors appointed James Jefferson to the post Oct. 19 to fill the slot vacated by former judge Richard Bradford.
