Sharkey sheriff seeks help in finding killer of mother, child

ROLLING FORK — Five weeks after a Cary mother and her daughter were knifed to death in Sharkey County, law enforcement is asking the public anew to help find the killer.

Karitha Carroll, 31, was found with multiple stab wounds to her chest, and 3-year-old Jamaya Carroll was found with multiple slash wounds to her neck by their uncle about 12 hours after they had died on Sept. 23, Sharkey County Coroner Angelia Eason has said.

“This is a difficult case because no one has seen anything,” said Sharkey County Sheriff Lindsey Adams. “A lot of times, the public helps out more than anything. I’m asking anybody with information to come forward.”

Adams said officials are relying solely on DNA collected at the scene and waiting for results at the Mississippi Crime Lab.

“They’re running it through the database,” Adams said of the evidence being compared to 15 swab samples taken from friends, family members and other people associated with Karitha Carroll.

He said no one is being ruled out in the investigation.

Sharkey County officials and Double Quick convenience store, where Karitha Carroll worked, are offering separate $1,000 rewards for information leading to an arrest.

Days after the killing, the sheriff’s office received information that U.S. Marshals fugitive Robert Lee King, 45, was in the Rolling Fork and Hollandale area about the time the mother and daughter were found.

King, who is a suspect in the 2005 killing of a Memphis woman and an attack on her 20-year-old daughter, was named a person of interest by sheriff’s deputies. Evidence collected in the investigation of King contradicts the report of his being in Rolling Fork, Deputy Marshal Brian Monson said.

“Nothing else linked him to the area,” Monson said.

King’s name was added to the U.S. Marshals most wanted fugitive list in May 2009.

To help the family manage during their loss, an account has been set up at Trustmark National Bank on Halls Ferry Road in Vicksburg for anyone interested in donating. Family friend Angela Brown said donors should inform the teller that funds are to be deposited into the account of Bettie Carroll of Rolling Fork. Officials are asking anyone with information in the investigation to contact Sharkey County Crimestoppers at 662-873-2652.
