Four Columbus police officers involved in a May 5 incident at Vicksburg National Military Park have lost an appeal before the Columbus Civil Commission and will have arguments heard Nov. 20 in 16th Circuit Court.
Officers Wade Beard, Heath Beard, Robert Walker and Cpl. Spence Wallingford were suspended and placed on six months probation by the Columbus Police Department after they were called home from a three-day field sobriety training course in Vicksburg. The four were reported by a visitor to park rangers for playing loud music and using flashers to deter visitors from approaching the police cruiser in which they were riding with the trunk popped open. No citation was issued to the officers who were asked by park staff to cease the inappropriate behavior, park officials said.
A Lowndes County sheriff’s deputy in the vehicle was reprimanded for his part in the incident. The Columbus Police Department issued statements apologizing for the incident following the suspensions.
