A second charge of possession of precursor chemicals was not prosecuted.

A Warren County jury found a fellow defendant in the case, James Dudley Maynord, 35, guilty in September of possession of meth and possession of precursors, and he was sentenced by Patrick Oct. 2 to a net of 10 years in prison plus $20,000 in fines.

“Dudley Maynord was sentenced by the court after a trial and not upon the recommendation of our office,” District Attorney Ricky Smith said regarding the differences in the sentences. “Generally when a defendant goes to trail, we leave it to the discretion of the judge or ask for the maximum sentence.”

Friends and family of the defendant also are allowed to write letters to the judge regarding sentencing.

In regard to the dropped precursor possession charge, Smith said, “The evidence also indicated that the majority of the chemicals for which Mr. Maynord was found guilty were in his truck. Mr. Jones was found in the apartment, so there was not as strong a tie between him and the substances used to create methamphetamine as there was with Mr. Maynord.”

Arrested with Jones and Maynord were Johnny Anderson, 35, 4728 Nailor Road; and Angela Wright, 29, 112 Bering St.

The four were in Jones’ apartment at Magnolia Commons, a Grange Hall Road. Sheriff’s deputies and agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics found methamphetamine in the apartment and a portable meth lab in the back of Maynord’s truck with an active cook in process.

Subsequent to the arrest, Maynord’s attorney requested a severance of his case from the other defendants.

Anderson pleaded guilty in a different case to shooting into an occupied dwelling. He is serving an eight-year prison term, to which he was sentenced by Patrick in June. The meth-related charges were not prosecuted, Smith said.

Wright’s case is still pending.
