In attendance

• Marketing students Kaci Holdiness and Jalorine Chandler and Donna Cook, DECA adviser at Hinds Career and Technical Center, attended the 2009 Southern Region DECA Conference in Orlando, Fla. They attended professional workshops; received certificates in sports and entertainment marketing; and spent a day at Universal Studios’ special session on the planning and promotion of the Simpson Ride. Kaci is the daughter of Ricky and Linda Holdiness; Jalorine is the daughter of John Chandler and Lorraine Bride.

• Wilson Barlow and Joseph Farrar, both of Vicksburg, are participating in the Cooperative Education Program at Mississippi State University. The program allows a student to affiliate with a business while alternating semesters at MSU to combine practical experience with theoretical training. Barlow, a mechanical engineering major, is working at Red Hills Power Plant in Ackerman. Farrar, a computer science major, is working at SmartSynch Inc. in Jackson.

Achievements

• Hinds Community College’s Career and Technical Center DECA officers for 2009-2010 are April Howard, president; Jeffery Mounger, vice president; Falencia Anderson, secretary; Jalorine Chandler, historian; Amber Wright, reporter; Kaci Holdiness, Warren Central representative; Warren Hogan, Vicksburg High representative; and Leigh Ann Roberts, community service representative.

Upcoming events

• The Links at the Library — Pre-K through fifth-grade literacy program, 11 a.m.-noon Saturday; Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library; Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong, featured storyteller; refreshments will be served; parents must accompany children.

• Pennies for Patients Campaign — Seeking schools to participate, January-March 2010; sponsored by the Mississippi office of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; schools may register by calling Sharon at 601-956-7447; more information at www.lls.org or www.schoolandyouth.org.
