She was called the “Hopping Kate” because the steamboat Kate Adams set speed records — for example, 5 hours 18 1/2 minutes from Helena to Memphis in 1883. She lasted only six years, burning at Commerce Landing 40 miles below Memphis in 1888. Her usual trade route was from Arkansas City to Memphis; she made 602 trips in her brief lifespan.
