Poor manners detracted from Christmas caroling contest

What has happened to our society today? My mother taught me manners, did yours?

As the 5th Annual V105.5 Caroling Contest took place, I have never seen an audience so rude. People were walking the entire time, laughing, yelling to acquaintances on the other side of the auditorium and talking on cell phones.

The worst part was that announcer kept begging people to stop. Grown, supposedly mature, adults would not do what he asked.

The station was trying to record the show for radio and many in the audience would not quit talking and moving around while performers were on stage.

As a performer, I cannot even begin to describe how distracting it was to be on stage trying to sing with all the chaos. As a teacher, it was hard to expect my students to behave. My students did not understand why I would expect them to stay seated and be quiet and respectful of the performer on stage, when adults were acting that way.

The auditorium was full of students from schools all over town. The contest was a great learning opportunity for them. What did they learn? They definitely did not learn manners or acceptable concert etiquette.

Thank you V105.5 for trying to do something great for the City of Vicksburg.
