A Vicksburg man was being sought this morning in the abuse of his 2-year-old daughter who suffered “severe head trauma and other injuries” in an attack last month.

Derrick Cox, 30, no street address, is wanted on a felony child abuse warrant.

Vicksburg police Sgt. Sandra Williams said the child was taken to River Region Medical Center and transferred to University Medical Center on Nov. 9 for injuries she was believed to have sustained the day before.

The little girl had head injuries and bruises over much of her body, Williams said.

The child was released about a week later to and remains in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Human Services, Williams said.

She said the child was living in the home with two siblings, ages 6 and 8, and her mother and father. The siblings were also in DHS custody this morning, Williams said. Cox’s Vicksburg address was not made public to protect the identity of the children.

The mother has not been charged, Williams said. She remained in the home, Williams said.

She said information on the crime was not made public because the department was attempting to allow investigators to arrest Cox without his knowing he was being sought. However, she said, he since has been seen in Vicksburg.

Anyone with information about Cox is asked to call police at 601-636-2511.
