A Vicksburg man arrested Tuesday for the Monday night armed robbery of a Drummond Street gas station picked up a drug charge when he was taken into custody.
Police arrested Richard Smith, 18, near a friend’s home on Pearl Street. They found an Eastfield 12-gauge pump shotgun, a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun and clothes believed to have been worn in the holdup at Mac’s Gas, 1921 Drummond St., Assistant Chief Jeffery Scott Sr. said.
Smith, 502 Bowmar Ave., is accused of holding three store clerks at gunpoint while he took money from the register, police Sgt. Sandra Williams said.
When arrested, Smith had 26 small bags of marijuana valued at $5 each in his possession, Scott said. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute along with armed robbery and held with no bond immediately set.
Williams said investigators found Smith standing at Pearl and Klein streets while they were trying to serve warrants on the armed robbery and an unrelated misdemeanor. He was arrested without incident.
A witness statement said the robber made a threat outside the store and the witness shouted to personnel to lock the door. The door glass was broken out with the butt of a gun so the robber could enter.
Smith was in the Warren County Jail this morning.
