A burning mattress forced deputies to temporarily move 16 Warren County Jail inmates from a second floor cell block Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
“One of the inmates somehow caught a mattress on fire,” said Vicksburg fire Capt. Randy Rippy.
Pinkston Patterson, 27, no known local address, was charged today with arson, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
Patterson, who had been in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections was brought to Warren County in August to face business burglary charges, Pace said. He had been in a state facility for robbery and cocaine convictions.
Rippy said only the mattress was damaged, and no one was injured.
Pace said the inmates who shared the cell block with Patterson were held in a recreational area while the fire was extinguished and the smoke cleared.
Patterson remained in the Warren County Jail today.
Three people charged with business burglary
Three Vicksburg people were arrested for the burglary of a business on South Frontage Road early this morning.
Arrested at 3:18 were Cody Goulette, 17, 107 Warren St.; Benjamin Brasfield, 25, 111 Hillside Drive; and Stephanie Hartwell, 18, 306 Trindle Circle. They are accused of taking money bags containing documents from the business, an unknown amount of change, a 90-piece Ryobi drilling and driving accessory kit, an envelope of business checks and a Quick Silver gas container with gasoline from Watkins’ Nursery Home & Garden Center, Vicksburg police Sgt. Sandra Williams said.
“During a routine patrol, officers noticed their vehicle coming from the business,” said Williams. The three were stopped at the intersection of Clay Street and Mississippi 27.
They also were charged with possession of burglary tools, Williams said.
Ownership of the gas can is unclear, but the suspects are accused of siphoning gasoline from a vehicle parked at the business, she said.
All three were being held without bond this morning at Vicksburg police headquarters.
Fourth charge filed in robbery at home
A fourth suspect was in the Warren County Jail today on three counts of armed robbery at a home at the Apple Orchard Apartments last week.
Edward Stowers, 42, 128 Village Drive, is accused of participating in an armed robbery at an apartment in which four people stormed into the home and stole cash and electronics, Sheriff Martin Pace said.
The armed robbery at the complex at 902 Blossom Lane was reported Saturday, and on the same day three arrests were made: Anthony T. Jackson, 26, 902 Blossom Lane; Allen L. Jones, 24, 1511 Spring St.; and Karie Calvary, 27, Battlefield Campground.
Stowers remained in the Warren County Jail today; the others were released Monday on a $15,000 bond.
