A Louisiana man died Wednesday after stepping from his car and collapsing at a rest area off the eastbound lane of Interstate 20 near Bovina, authorities said.

David R. Ellerbe, 50, of Rayville, was pronounced dead at the rest area, Warren County Deputy Coroner Ronald C. Regan said.

Foul play is not suspected, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace and Regan said, but the body will undergo an autopsy at the state crime lab in Jackson.

“It was just an unattended, unexpected death,” Regan said.

According to Pace, a witness parked at the rest area called 911 shortly before 11:30 a.m. after watching Ellerbe drive up, get out of his idling car, walk “a short distance” and collapse.

He was not breathing by the time paramedics from the Vicksburg Fire Department arrived at the rest area, Pace said.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Highway Patrol combed the area but found no evidence of “injury or any type of foul play,” Pace said.
