St. Al held Porters Chapel without a field goal for more than 12 minutes in the second half, and used a dominating rebounding effort to win 51-29 in the opening game of the Red Carpet Classic at Warren Central.
The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for St. Al (4-14), and eased the sting of a rough loss to Sebastopol on Friday night. In that game, St. Al didn’t score a point for the last 2 1/2 quarters.
“It’ll help us with our confidence. We needed something,” said St. Al forward Tori Hines, who had 17 points and nine rebounds. “I think we played one of our best games, together as a team. We passed it well.”
The Lady Flashes also rebounded well. They enjoyed a 42-27 edge on the boards. All five starters had at least five rebounds apiece, while three had 10 or more. Ann Garrison Thomas grabbed 11 and Sara Howington had 10 to go along with eight points. Carlye Smith scored 15 points.
“We jumped at the right times. That’s all I can say,” Hines said.
St. Al had plenty of opportunities for rebounds in the second half. PCA (0-12) missed its first 25 shots — many of them long jumpers — and didn’t hit a field goal until Shelby Wells’ layup with 3:18 to play in the fourth quarter. After Wells finished the three-point play with a free throw, St. Al led 49-21. It was 24-15 at halftime.
Despite the lopsided final score, Wells had an incredible game for PCA. She scored all but two of her team’s points, finishing with 27 and 10 rebounds, and scored 13 points in the last 3:18.
Wells went 10-for-23 from the field. The rest of the Lady Eagles were a combined 1-for-29.

Ford Biedenharn and Sean Johnson scored 16 points apiece, Luke Burnett had eight steals and eight rebounds, and St. Aloysius (4-14) used a teancious defensive effort to beat Porters Chapel (5-8).
Talbot Buys had six points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots for PCA.
