Warren Central had a solid plan for defeating Greenville-Weston. Once it went away from that plan, things quickly fell apart.

Quinmeka Shaw hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:24 to play, and Greenville scored the rest of its points from the foul line to beat the Lady Vikes 57-52 on Friday night.

Ricille Davis led Warren Central with 27 points and seven rebounds, but her only basket in the fourth quarter was a layup at the buzzer. They were the only points the Lady Vikes scored in the last 2:44. They missed four shots and had a turnover on their last five possessions.

“The last two or trips down we didn’t look for Ricille Davis. She’s our first option and she ended up being no option,” WC coach Jackie Martin-Glass said. “The plan was there, but we didn’t execute.”

Warren Central’s loss, combined with Vicksburg’s victory over Clinton on Friday, settled the race for the regular-season Division 4-6A championship. Vicksburg finished first and will face WC (16-7, 2-4) in the first round of the division tournament on Feb. 9 in Greenville. Clinton will play Greenville (18-2, 4-2) in the other first-round game.

Nine of the 12 games played inside the division were decided by 10 points or less. Even though WC will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed, Davis said the balance in the league made seeding irrelevant.

“That was a hard loss, but we’ll bounce back. We’re still going to come out on top,” Davis said. “We can beat them. We’ve just got to stick to the gameplan.”

Friday’s game was another close one. Neither team led by more than seven points at any point, and it was a one-point game after Shaw hit the 3-pointer — her only basket of the game — with 2:24 to play.

Warren Central turned it over on its next possession, and Greenville started cashing in from the foul line. Four different players hit free throws in the last two minutes. The last two came from Breanna Lewis with 9.9 seconds to go and made it 57-50.

Lewis finished with 32 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, Greenville was 23-for-28 from the foul line.

“That’s big on the road. That’s big at home. But it’s especially big on the road,” Grerenville coach Curtis Stovall said.

(B) Greenville 63, WC 52

Danny Bolden scored 20 points, and Greenville-Weston used a 17-4 run just before halftime to beat Warren Central.

Bolden’s 3-pointer with 4:20 left in the second quarter gave the Hornets (11-12, 5-1) an 18-14 lead and ignited the run. Greenville led 32-18 at halftime, and never allowed Warren Central (3-22, 0-6) to make a run in the second half. Although WC outscored Greenville 34-31 in the second half, it never got closer than nine points.

B.J. Williams led Warren Central with 21 points and Cory Davis added 11.

(B) Tallulah 57,  Tensas 53

Jes Shivers led four Tallulah Academy players in double figures with 17 points, Tandon Baker had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and the Trojans won for the ninth time in 11 games.

Jake Busby added 13 points and nine rebounds for Tallulah (17-10, 7-3 District 6-A), and John Robert Fortenberry scored 12 points. J.T. James led Tensas with 16 points.

Tallulah jumped to a 35-13 lead at halftime before withstanding a furious rally by the Chiefs. Tensas outscored Tallulah 28-16 in the final period, but never got closer than the final score.

Tallulah clinched the No. 2 seed in next week’s District 6-A tournament. It will have a bye in the first round, and face either Briarfield or Chamberlain-Hunt next Friday at 5:15 p.m.
