Park guide to focus on women Saturday

Vicksburg National Military Park will celebrate National Women’s History Month with a series of special programs and exhibits.

Park Ranger Ray Hamel will guide a motor tour through the park and speak about “Monumental Maidens: the female form in Memorial Art” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The tour will include an overview of the founding of the park, monumentation, sculptress Theo Kitson and the use of female form in Victorian sculpture.

Ranger Shawn Williams will speak on women’s history related to Vicksburg each day at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. beneath the canopy at the USS Cairo and museum.

Visitors will drive their vehicles on the tour, and presentations will take place at monuments, from Minnesota to Alabama.

People wishing to join the tour are to meet at the visitor center at 9:45 a.m.

Admission is $8 per carload and is valid for a week. Vicksburg and national park passes will be honored with no additional fees. In case of bad weather, Hamel will pre-sent a slide show.
