End ‘family tradition’

A report in your paper stated that many county residents are upset because the school board voted 3-2 to hire Josh Morgan, the son of former football coach Robert Morgan, as the new head coach at Warren Central. I can assure these folks that nothing will change because the elder Morgan will remain a coach as he has under a contract with the Vicksburg Warren system since he retired and Curtis Brewer became the head coach in name.

The taxpayers simply paid for an extra coach at a high salary who was receiving retirement benefits from the same system paying his contract, and who did not have to pretend to be a teacher.

It’s like the old Hank Williams, Jr. song says: “Why do you drink, (Hank) why do you roll smoke, why must you live out the songs that you wrote?” The answer: He’s “just carryin’ on an old family tradition,” and the county schools, before and after merging with the city schools, are still doing the same.

I do not know two of the three school board members who voted for employing the new head coach, but I am not happy with the one I do know. Ms. Murphy is the only school board member who seems to be interested in education.

However, we must move on. Dr. Price is retiring in June. He has succeeded in turning a halfway decent system into an inadequate system with failed policies, such as intercession, which simply means more recesses for all students who need to be in school. We need a new leader, a new direction, a more transparent school board that will end family tradition, especially when it means hiring unqualified coaches or teachers for high positions.
