Vols hand Ole Miss a Sunday setback

It’s now been a month of miserable Sundays for Ole Miss.

Tennessee took the lead with a tiebreaking RBI single from Charley Thurber in the top of the ninth inning, and took advantage of two Ole Miss errors in the same frame to beat the Rebels 10-6 on Sunday in Oxford.

It was the fifth consecutive Sunday loss for Ole Miss (21-8, 5-4 Southeastern Conference). And, unlike previous weekends when the Rebels could take solace in winning the series, this time they dropped two out of three to a team stuck in last place in the SEC East. Ole Miss lost the last two games of the series after winning Friday’s opener.

“We didn’t play as well as Tennessee,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “They beat us in all phases. This was better than previous Sundays where we actually gave ourselves a shot to win. We didn’t get enough runs to extend the lead when we could have.”

Ole Miss led 6-4 heading into the eighth inning, but couldn’t hold on.

Back-to-back two-out singles by Zach Osborne and Thurber, a walk and another single by Khayyan Norfork tied the game at 6. Tennessee (15-14, 2-7) then scored four runs in the ninth to take the lead for good.

Thurber blooped a an RBI single into right field and P.J. Polk followed with another RBI single to make it 8-6. Norfork then doubled down the left field line to bring in two more runs.

Ole Miss starter David Goforth allowed two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, but the bullpen twice squandered a lead. Four relievers allowed seven runs — only three of them earned — and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Ole Miss also left 10 runners on base and hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the eighth.
