A household hazardous waste collection day is scheduled for May 8 for Eagle Lake residents in Warren County affected by last Saturday’s tornadoes.

The pickup is scheduled for Simmon’s Gin on Eagle Lake Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The wastes eligible for the HHW collection services are:

• Household chemicals, cleaners, insecticides and herbicides, pool chemicals, used oil, gasoline, automotive batteries, paints, thinner, varnish, thermostats, lighting ballasts and other similar items.

• Electronic waste includes televisions, computer systems, stereo systems, cell phones and other similar wastes damaged in the storm.

• Large bulky household appliances also known as white goods include refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters and other similar large metal appliances.

A second collection day is scheduled for June 26.

In addition, those in Warren County affected by the storm are eligible for disaster assistance by calling 1-800-621-3362, or online at www.disasterassistance.gov.

Mississippi Emergency Management Director Mike Womack said more storms this weekend could threaten the same areas. He said strong to severe storms could continue through Sunday. These storms will bring the threat of severe thunderstorms, damaging wind, frequent lightning, large hail, tornadoes and heavy rainfall.

 “Residents who may still be staying in their damaged homes or have had to relocate to a tent or sub-standard structure due to Saturday’s tornado damage should make arrangements to stay in a shelter or with friends,” Womack said.  “We don’t want to alarm people, but making plans before the storms threaten will ensure our residents are safe.”

Forecasters say the Mississippi Delta area will see the greatest risk of severe weather and flooding.
