2005 homicide case ‘not to point to present’ to jury

The 2005 shooting death of Kennado Caples was not among the 90 presented to the Warren County Grand Jury last week, District Attorney Ricky Smith said.
Three defendants have been charged in Caples’ death: Dwight Albert, 35, 240 Bazinsky Road; his sister, Kathryn Blue, 30, 2606 Ken Karyl Ave.; and Larry Hamlin, 30, 848 Shenandoah Valley Road, Jackson.
Smith said before grand jury selection May 3 that the Caples case was among those the jury might review. After conferring with investigating officers, he said, it was decided “the case was not to the point to present it to the grand jury yet.”
The grand jury is charged with reviewing evidence against defendants in criminal cases, including hearing testimony from police and other witnesses, and deciding if the evidence is enough to support a trial. If so, an indictment is issued and the defendant is arraigned — formally advised of the charges — in circuit court. If not, defendants are no-billed and released.
All three defendants in the Caples case were arrested shortly after the 26-year-old was found shot several times in his home at 2708 Letitia St. on May 8, 2005. Blue, who shared the home with Caples, had been charged as an accessory, Albert and Hamlin with murder, but had been no-billed by a grand jury.
Vicksburg police arrested them again in December after what Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong called a “cold case” investigation. This time, Blue and Albert face murder charges while Hamlin is charged as an accessory.
Grand jury indictments are not made public until defendants have been arraigned or waived arraignment.
Three additional indictments handed down last week were released by the DA’s office Monday:
• Charles Anderson, 47, address unavailable, Happy, Texas — possession of a controlled substance, Aug. 30.
• Adrian Demetrius Carr, 27, 196 East St., Louise — grand larceny, between Oct. 29, 2008, and Jan. 27, 2009.
• Yvetta Shorter Slade, 54, 644 Fort Hill Drive — embezzlement, between Oct. 23, 2006, and Nov. 1, 2006.
The next grand jury term begins July 26.
