Two Vicksburg men were shot Tuesday night after a fight that started over the purported purchase of a dog.

Justin Vinzant, 26, told Warren County deputies that four men went to his home at 3067 Redbone Road and asked him about buying a pit bull, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

“When he went outside, one pulled a weapon and demanded money,” said Pace.

A fight then broke out between Vinzant and the men just as Travis Scott McCullough, 27, 49 Cottonwood Drive, arrived at the home; then shots were fired, Pace said.

Vinzant was hit in the shoulder, and McCullough was hit in the arm, Pace said. Both men were taken to River Region Medical Center, and Vinzant remained there this morning in fair condition, hospital spokesman Allen Karel said. McCullough was released Tuesday night.

The four men left the home in a white four-door sedan, and McCullough ran to a neighbor’s home to call for help, the sheriff said.

No arrests had been made, Pace said.

“We do have leads we’re pursuing,” said Pace. “We did recover a semi-automatic handgun at the scene. It is believed to be used by one of the suspects.”

No one else was reported injured.
