Walking club to host park event Saturday

A walking club that developed from the Shape Up Vicksburg weight-loss campaign held earlier this year is hosting a Saturday event at the Vicksburg National Military Park.

“This is one of the biggest walks we’re going to have,” Shape Up Sisters gym owner and event organizer Linda Fondren said. “This is a battle against obesity, and the weapon we have against obesity is walking.”

Walkers will meet at 8 a.m. at Sherman Avenue Elementary, off U.S. 61 North, and the route will continue into the park. The park’s entrance fee will be waived for the event, the third in a series of scheduled, monthly walks.

Participants can walk a half-mile or one-, two- or three-mile courses.

Medical professionals will be on hand to answer health and fitness questions, and free pedometers and water will be available. Members of the Vicksburg High School marching band will lead the walk, as well as city and county officials and members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center.

Shape Up Vicksburg walking club, with about 250 members, has hosted walking events at the Outlets at Vicksburg and Riverfront Park since forming after the Shape Up Vicksburg 17-Week Weight Loss Challenge wrapped up in February. The group is free to join.
