The shade didn’t reach far enough for Earl Kuhnert, a private contractor, as he attached new shingles to the steeple of Bingham Memorial M.B. Church at Letitia and Meadow streets Monday in temperatures that neared 100 degrees. The heat index, what the temperature feels like when humidity and heat are combined, reached about 105. Kuhnert was hoping Monday would be his last day to work on the church, after two weeks of replacing trim and shingles.
