An idea that began four years ago will come to a close Saturday as Wardell Wince and others born in 1934 gather for the fourth and final Babies of 1934 Breakfast.
The event will be at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Post 3 on Monroe Street.
“We’ve talked about being born right after the Great Depression,” said Wince, 76 and a former U.S. Marine. “The government would ration items. I remember when they would give you stamps for shoes. It was rough back then. There was so much going on that year.”
Other major events in 1934, Wince said, include the deaths of outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in Bienville Parish, La., and bank robber John Dillinger in Chicago, as well as the births of the Dionne babies in Canada, the first quintuplets known to survive infancy.
An average of about 60 people, including 1934 babies, family members and friends have attended Wince’s past three events, he said.
On the menu will be grits, eggs, bacon and other dishes.
“We’re getting up in age,” said Wince of hosting a morning event. “We like to be inside after dark.”
