County pares road work to-do list

Designs and bids to resurface and stripe a few roads in Warren County are still planned before the new fiscal year and will target a list of shorter and cheaper segments than a package completed in June.
About two miles of poorly rated stretches of Blossom Lane, Old Jackson Road, Newmans Road and Kirkland Road now lead a slate of roads modified by Road Department officials and county engineers from the list of 346 roads completed six weeks ago. Shorter streets near each of those four — Redbud Circle, Cottonwood Place and Columbus Road — are also eyed for repaving. The county hopes to have specifications out for bids before the fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
The four longer segments handle more traffic per day, but work out cheaper than roads rated in worse shape but dependent on state money to maintain. Cost estimates for the seven areas, according to the 2010 road condition list, total $551,556, less than the $1.7 million in surface repairs needed to the seven roads that topped the list originally.
“That would be the end of things we know we can do with the money we’ve got,” County Engineer John McKee said of the seven.
