Board delays decision on spending for local benefit for coast cleanup

A benefit concert for Gulf Coast cleanup efforts is planned for downtown, but Vicksburg’s mayor and aldermen want more details on the downtown show before allocating $500 in city funds for radio advertising.

“What we want to do is get as many people involved and make this as successful as possible, because it is for the Gulf Coast,” WBBV-River 101 and K-Hits-104.5 representative Sabrina van den Nieuwboer told the board Monday. “We’re going to broadcast it live on both of our radio stations.”

The concert is being put together by owners of three Washington Street businesses — Duff’s Tavern & Grille, The Upper End and Willingham’s — in conjunction with the Vicksburg Main Street Program.

Organizers are still working to get an OK from the city to close a portion of Washington Street near Clay Street in front of the organizing businesses, in hopes of staging some of the entertainment outside and host a cookout. Main Street Executive Director Kim Hopkins said they’re also asking the city to waive the outdoor open container restriction for the event. Those issues are expected to come before the board at its meeting Friday, in addition to the advertisement request.

The concert is set to begin at 2 p.m. July 31. A number of musicians and groups are confirmed for the show, including Jimbo Mathus, Rocket 88, L.C. Omar, The Owens Brothers Band, Seth Libbey and The Koestler Brothers, and even more have expressed an interest in participating.

“At first it was planned for a much smaller event, but it’s kind of taken on a life of its own,” said Duff’s owner Les Pearman. “All of the people in this area have connections to somebody on the Gulf Coast. They’re our friends and neighbors, and we just want to bring some awareness and any relief we can.”

Advance tickets to the benefit show are on sale for $12 at Duff’s. Tickets at the door will be $15. All of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the United Way to go toward its relief efforts on the coast.
