City approves street closure, open containers for benefit

A July 31 downtown concert benefiting Gulf Coast residents affected by the oil disaster got the OK for a partial street closure in the 1300 block of Washington Street by the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen Friday, meaning some bands will perform outdoors.

The police department has also agreed to waive the open container restriction from 2 to 10 p.m. for the show. However, the mayor and aldermen rejected a request from a local radio station for $500 to help promote the event.

“It wasn’t that we didn’t like the event or their efforts,” South Ward Alderman Sid Beauman explained. “It’s just not really in the scope of our normal advertising spending, and this time of the year is always tough as far as giving advertising dollars.”
