Siege subdues Madness

A rivalry that got stirred up on Facebook saw the Vicksburg Siege gain a submission from the Vicksburg Madness in the opening game of the Governor’s Cup 13-year-olds’ tournament Friday at Halls Ferry Park.

Over the years, the players from each team have either played with or against each other at some point in their youth baseball careers. The Siege, however, has been playing all summer together, while the Madness got together just for the Governor’s Cup.

The Siege (15-10) got the best of Friday’s action thanks to solid hitting. They belted out 12 hits in just three innings of work to take the 7-5 pool play win.

“We just didn’t hit while they hit the ball good,” Madness coach Brad Hasty said. The Madness was held to just two hits but did benefit from the wildness of Siege starter Zach Cox.

“Yeah, we got some runs thanks to the walks,” Hasty said.

Cox walked five and hit one to spot the Madness four runs. Mario Doyle came in relief and walked just one batter over the final 31⁄3 innings.

The Siege got the bats working from the start. They had five hits and made use of four errors to score four runs and tie the game at 4. They got three more hits in the second, with the last coming on a key two-run single by Cox to snap a 4-all tie.

The Madness got a run back in the top of the third when Rhett Hasty walked and then scored on Alec Kitchens’ double.

The Siege came back with a run in the bottom of the third when Matthew Chambers singled and then scored on Doyle’s RBI grounder to make it 7-5.

Doyle then retired the side in order in the fourth to finish the contest and earn the win.

Siege coach Pat Chambers was elated for his team.

“This was a big win for our kids. They have been talking a lot to each other on Facebook. A lot of them have played with each other before this tournament,” Chambers said.

The Madness is primarily made up of junior varsity players from St. Aloysius. They played a set schedule of high school teams in June before taking much of July off until last week’s Governor’s Cup 14-year-olds’ tournament, where they went 0-3.

The Siege has been playing together since June.

“This is our sixth tournament and we’ve won two. We were outstanding down in the World Series in Pace, Fla., and nearly beat the Tennessee state champs twice. We won the first one and then I cost us the second game because of a pitching mistake,” Chambers said.

The Siege got two hits and two runs from Marcus Ragan along with two RBIs apiece from Cox and Doyle, while Taylor Hollowell and Matthew Chambers each had two hits and a run scored.

Pat Murphy and Alec Kitchens accounted for the two hits by the Madness.
