Tyson Foods and its contracted cleaner have completed work to clear a sewage lagoon of grease and other by-products from its chicken plant at Ceres industrial park, a company spokesman said this morning.
Sludge material was still being trucked away from the lagoon late Tuesday, weeks after a buildup of about 60,000 gallons of grease and other by-products from the chicken plant were cited as the source of a foul stench in the air. Neighbors to the plant in Flowers have complained to the Warren County Port Commission, which owns and leases the industrial park.
Tyson gave to the port commission two aerators that will be used to add more oxygen to parts of the lagoon closest to the plant so solids can be broken up faster. Tyson, whose headquarters are in Springdale, Ark., contracted with Terra Removal of Dardanelle, Ark., to clean the lagoon.
