Arrows shoot down Missy Gators

Any momentum Vicksburg High may have had from last week’s dramatic win over archrival Warren Central was extinguished in a lopsided loss Tuesday to visiting Clinton.

The Lady Arrows (11-12) scored 10 runs in the first inning and added six more in the third to go on to a 19-3 rout of the Missy Gators at Halls Ferry Park.

The loss drops Vicksburg to 7-9. The Missy Gators have a home-and-home series with Florence next week before going into the Class 6A playoffs in October at either Meridian or Northwest Rankin.

Vicksburg coach Michelle Fisackerly said the Missy Gators must go back to the drawing board to fix the problems that Clinton exposed on Tuesday.

“We had an off day,” Fisackerly said. “We need to go back and work on our defense and also work on our offense.”

Neither was very good against Clinton. The Missy Gators made 10 errors in the field and had just three hits on offense. All three of the runs came in the bottom of the first to cut Clinton’s 10-0 lead to 10-3. Lea Davies smacked a two-run triple to right to score Victoria Lewis and Shannon Botsford. Davies scored later on a fielder’s choice by Faith Thomas.

Kortni Newman had a hit in the third inning, the final hit for the Vicksburg offense.

Clinton’s six-run third inning made it 17-3. The Arrows added two runs in the fourth to account for the final.

Valencia Thigpen led the Lady Arrows with two doubles and four RBIs. Jessica Truex had two hits and four runs scored.
