On Saturday, there were more than 60, and that doesn’t touch the number of volunteers at the Vicksburg National Military Park all year long.
“We’re grateful for the people who come out,” park superintendent Mike Madell said. “Folks need to know that we have volunteer opportunities year-round.”
Saturday’s gathering was for National Public Lands Day, but throughout the year volunteers help greet the public, answering questions and giving directions at the visitors center; high school and college students volunteer as re-enactors for the Living History program; tour guides ride with carloads of visitors; and others take on manual chores to help clear and preserve the park.
