Summer temps dominated the city throughout the week as high temperatures remained in the 90s. Overnight lows remained steady around 70 degrees. No rainfall was reported during the week.

The Mississippi River at Vicksburg climbed back up over 15 feet after dropping to 14.7 during the week. It was on the decline again by week’s end and a reading of 14.2 was predicted for today.

Forty-two people from 23 nations recited the oath of allegiance and received certificates during a naturalization ceremony held outside the USS Cairo Museum. The special ceremony was held in recognition of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.

Hundreds gathered at City Park for a Tea Party rally in support of conservative candidates in the upcoming congressional mid-term elections. Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and Republican congressional candidate Bill Marcy spoke of a GOP takeover of Congress in November.

Local birdwatchers assembled atop Fort Hill hoping to catch a glimpse of broadwing hawks and identify birds by their flight paths. The birdwatch was organized by the Jackson Audubon Society.

Riverwalk Casino may be refunded more than $110,000 from taxes paid on local holdings if legal advisers agree to a settlement OK’d by Warren County supervisors. The casino has argued for a $30.7 million total value and claimed the county didn’t follow state criteria for gaming venues of comparable size.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved an increase in municipal court fees and fines in the coming weeks. Municipal Court Judge Nancy Thomas said the current ordinance that lists municipal court costs is outdated and includes only $1 court fee for misdemeanor convictions.

Alvin Dwayne Tilley, 21, died from head trauma at University Medical Center in Jackson several days after a motor vehicle accident on Tucker Road. Authorities said Tilley was southbound on Tucker when he became distracted and lost control of the car he was driving.

Vicksburg native Farrah Martin has been named an NBC-TV Education Champion, and her teaching may be featured on a segment of “Dateline.” After participating in the Teach for America program, she made New Orleans her home where she now oversees science and social studies curriculum for the Algiers Charter Schools Association.

American Cruise Lines announced it will expand to the Mississippi River system and offer overnight passenger trips along excursions between Memphis and New Orleans. The sternwheeler joins Seattle-based Cruise West, which announced in June it will restart cruises along the Mississippi and its tributaries aboard the Spirit of America.

Grady Bishop, released a week ago on a burglary charge, was back in Warren County Jail after being charged with a burglary on Jeff Davis Road. He was ordered held without bond and faces eight burglary charges over the past four months.

Joblessness in Warren County was 9.2 percent for August, down from an adjusted 12 percent in July. The decrease resulted from a 3 percent shrinkage in the local labor force itself, figures showed; however it is the first time the local rate has dipped below double digits this year.

Authorities were continuing to search for a man who robbed the Mission 66 Trustmark branch at gunpoint. No injuries were reported, and an undetermined amount of cash was taken from the bank.
