Florida asks VHS to change its logo

Vicksburg High School has received some unwanted attention from the University of Florida.

Vicksburg-Warren School District officials received a letter last month from the university requesting that the high school stop using a trademarked logo that is also used by Florida.

The logo in question features a gator bursting out of an oval and is one of Florida’s main logos. It’s one of several used by Vicksburg High, mainly as a secondary logo. It is most prominently displayed as a painting on the side of the football fieldhouse and as a sticker on the football team’s helmets.

The school has already taken down some banners and signage bearing the logo.

WLBT-TV in Jackson reported on its web site today that the licensing company responsible for marketing Florida’s logo has sent the letters to a number of high schools around the country. Attempts to reach Vicksburg-Warren superintendent Elizabeth Duran Swinford, as well as Vicksburg High principal Derrick Reed this morning were unsuccessful.
