A Vicksburg pedestrian died early this morning after he was hit by a car as he walked along U.S. 61 South.

The victim, whose name has not been released because his family had not been contacted, apparently was walking south in the northbound lanes of the 2000 block of the four-lane highway at about 4:35 when he was hit, Vicksburg Deputy Chief John Dolan said.

The victim was identified only as a 42-year-old black male who might previously have lived in Utica.

Dolan said the investigation had not concluded whether the victim was on the shoulder or in the way of traffic when hit by a northbound 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by Demetri Marshall, 59, St. Thomas Court, Mobile.

Marshall did not stop, but instead drove himself to a gas station, where 911 was called. He was taken to River Region Medical Center and stabilized before being transferred to a hospital in Jackson, Dolan said.

He would not disclose which hospital, and no Jackson hospital this morning would confirm that he was a patient. One report was that Marshall told hospital employees that he believed he had hit a deer.

When the accident occurred, the victim was lifted onto the hood of the vehicle and broke the windshield.

Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said the victim died at the scene from multiple head and chest injuries, and an autopsy would be performed today at the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson.
