Cooksey is the triggerman in Gators’ offense

Vicksburg quarterback Cameron Cooksey likes to take his work home with him. After practice, the junior raids Alonzo Stevens’ film collection to brush up on the next opponent and spot imperfections in his footwork, his throwing motion and defense recognition.

Already, comparisons have been drawn between the junior and other great quarterbacks of the past at Vicksburg High.

“I just smile when I think of him,” Vicksburg coach Alonzo Stevens said. “Stanton Price, Les Lemons, Justin Henry, I’ve been blessed with some great quarterbacks, but Cooksey is right up there with them. He’s got a chance to be the most prolific passer that’s ever come through this school.”

Cooksey has emerged as the triggerman in one of the state’s most potent offenses. In his second season as a starter, the 6-1, 180-pound signal caller has completed 128 of 231 passes for 1,943 yards with 16 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.
