St. Aloysius senior tackle Matt Wooten was named the Region 4-1A Lineman of the Year by the league’s coaches this week.

Wooten, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound lineman, played offensive tackle and nose guard for the Flashes, leading them to a 5-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the region. They averaged 182.3 yards per game rushing. St. Al closed out its season with a 21-7 win at Sebastopol last Friday.

Wooten was surprised to get the award.

“Awards don’t mean a whole lot to me, but I feel good to have gotten this,” Wooten said.

Flashes coach B.J. Smithhart said Wooten was deserving.

“The Region 4 coaches voted him as the lineman of the year and he was very deserving of it,” Smithhart said. “It’s a shame Hinds (Community College) has not protected him yet. I think there is a place for someone like Matt Wooten.”

Several other Flashes were honored. Four players named first team all-region, and four more were on the second team.

Following Wooten on the first team were safety Ford Biedenharn, linebacker Mac Jones and running back Carlton Campbell. Campbell led the team in rushing, while Jones was the club’s second leading tackler.

Four underclassmen were named to the second team, led by center Robert Arledge. Sophomore guard Sage Lewis, junior lineman Scott Johnston and sophomore linebacker Elliott Bexley rounded out the honorees. Bexley was the Flashes’ leading tackler with 84 stops.
