HATTIESBURG — The nightclub where three University of Southern Mississippi football players were shot over the weekend has been shut down.
Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree said Tuesday the city is suspending for 30 days the operating license of Remington’s Hunt Club, located on North 31st Avenue off U.S. 49, just north of the USM campus. The owner has 10 days to appeal and request a hearing with the city council.
Linebackers Martez Smith, 22, of Canton, and Tim Green, 21, of Columbia, S.C., along with defensive end Deddrick Jones, 23, of Bastrop, La., were shot in the parking lot of the club after it closed early Sunday. The three players are being treated at Forrest General Hospital, where they have been listed in fair condition since the weekend.
Officials have been mum on the players’ injuries, but football coach Larry Fedora broke the silence Tuesday.
“Martez (Smith) is paralyzed right now from the waist down,” Fedora said. “We are hopeful that that may change one day in the future.”
A person speaking to the AP on the condition of anonymity Tuesday said Smith’s spinal cord is severed, and that Green was shot in the neck and Jones in the chest. A Clarion-Ledger article Tuesday said Green’s vocal cords are severed.
Of Green, Fedora said, “Nothing new right now — he is still in a situation where he cannot talk. He writes everything down.”
Of Jones, he said, “They got Deddrick out of bed today and he moved around which was a good thing.”
Meanwhile, two people have been arrested in the shootings and police were seeking a third.
Patricia Loftin Brown, 49, and Cleothus Wilkerson, 25, both of Bassfield, are charged with three counts each of accessory after the fact of aggravated assault. An arrest warrant for three counts of aggravated assault has been issued for Travis Brown of Prentiss. The Browns are mother and son, newspaper reports said.
Brown and Wilkerson were being held without bond in the Forrest County Jail pending an initial court appearance. It was unclear if they had attorneys.
Smith, Green and Jones and other teammates had been at the nightclub celebrating their win over 25th-ranked Central Florida on Saturday.
Hattiesburg police said they had been called to Remington’s Hunt Club 129 times between January and September.
