PEARL — After a strong start Monday night, Porters Chapel had fallen into a lull. Park Place Christian was creeping back into the game, and the Eagles looked flat, so coach E.J. Creel called a timeout.

Problem solved.

PCA ripped off a 12-2 run to end the first quarter, extended its lead to 19 points by halftime, and cruised home in the second half to a 62-34 victory.

“Somebody messed up, and that was the purpose of the calling it,” Creel said of the pivotal timeout. “After that, they just stepped it up.”

Ted Brisco scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter to lead PCA (3-3, 3-1 District 5-A), and Talbot Buys had a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Brisco and Buys were just part of a balanced effort, though. Six of the seven players who dressed out for the Eagles scored, and all five starters had at least 10 points and four rebounds apiece. Jake Boyd finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Peter Harris had 10 points and five assists. Matthew Warren had 11 points, nine rebounds and five steals.

“If we can play consistent like that, we’ll be hard to beat,” Creel said.

Damon Cole led Park Place (4-5, 2-3) with 12 points and John Cooper had 10 points and rebounds, but the Crusaders were only in the game for a few minutes.

PCA jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game, then let off the gas and let Park Place (4-5, 2-3) to pull with 13-9 at the 3:14 mark. The Eagles scored six points in 60 seconds after Creel’s timeout, mostly in transition, and took a commanding 25-11 lead at the end of the period. They were 12-for-20 from the field in the first quarter.
