The Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce has named nominees for its 2010 Educators of the Year awards.
The two winners, an elementary and secondary teacher, will be announced at noon Jan. 19 during the Chamber’s annual membership luncheon. The Chamber’s Business of the Year and Ambassador of the Year will also be named at the event.
The speaker will be Lonnie Moore, a training consultant for FranklinCovey — a company that provides time-management training, executive coaching and products such as day-planners.
The educators awards program began in 1990. Nominees are selected by their peers. Winners will receive $1,000, and are named by four retired educators who screen applications and conduct interviews.
This year, there are 18 nominees:
Rhonda R. Andrews
• School — Grove Street; Local Survey Committee chairman, resource teacher.
• Education — Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Jackson State University; teacher certification for special education, University of Mississippi; master’s in elementary education, Alcorn State University; pursuing doctorate in higher education and adult learning, Walden University.
• Professional organizations/memberships — American Federation of Teachers.
• Philosophy — “I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking and invites a sharing of ideas.”
