Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and this year Vicksburg is Keeping the Dream Alive with events leading up to and including the day the nation celebrates his birthday.
“This is the 25th anniversary of the holiday,” said Erica Roberts, spokesman for the local AmeriCorps team, who will remember with several happenings the year a federal holiday was established to honor the slain civil rights leader. “It is about the vision, community and service. We are relating those things to today, and these Corps members are taking ownership of themselves.”
The celebration will kick off at 9 a.m. Friday with the 25th Anniversary MLK Day Commemorative Program and Open House hosted by AmeriCorps NCCC in the gymnasium at the former All Saints’ Episcopal School campus on Confederate Avenue.
