Alcorn State has scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference in Jackson today to announce the hiring of former Grambling State head football coach Melvin Spears as the Braves’ next coach, several media outlets are reporting.

The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson and the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser reported the hiring. Spears spent last season as Alabama State’s offensive coordinator.

The former Alcorn State player spent three roller-coaster years at Grambling before being fired. He then coached a year in high school and had assistant coaching stints at Texas Southern and Alabama State.
