Lady Flashes soccer team down to final chance

St. Aloysius is down to its final shot at a berth in the postseason after falling 2-0 to divison-leading Madison-St. Joe on Tuesday.

The Lady Flashes (7-10, 1-2) need a win on Thursday against visiting Greenville-St. Joe to wrap up Division 4’s second and final spot in the playoffs. St. Al beat Greenville-St. Joe 1-0 in the previous meeting.

Despite missing leading scorer Nicole Hayward (ankle) and two other starters, St. Al coach Suzie Channell likes her team’s chances going into Thursday’s do-or-die match.

“We’ve got one more chance and we’re definitely going to take it to them,” St. Al coach Suzie Channell said. “I think they really played well tonight. I think that was one of the best games we’ve played as a team. We’ve got a couple of injuries and we added a couple more, but they’re digging deep, playing hard and finally starting to believe.”

The Flashes kept the game scoreless for most of the first half thanks to a pesky, suffocating defense that kept good shots to a minimum. But Olivia Barcellona finally stuck one home, booting in a rebound with just two minutes remaining in the first half.

Oriana Odell scored the second goal for Lady Bruins, slipping it just past the outreached arms of St. Al goalkeeper Alexa Baldizon and off the back post.

But the Lady Flashes have to forget the disappointing loss and move on to their final opportunity to earn a consecutive trip to the playoffs.

“Thursday, that’s our chance,” junior Riley Griffith said. “We just want to get it done and go back to the playoffs. We’ve lost some starters, but we’re still stepping it up.”
