Grant, Wooten atop list of county recruits

National signing day for football is today, but the pickings in Warren County are on the slim side.
Only two players planned to sign letters of intent today. St. Aloysius lineman Matt Wooten and Warren Central wide receiver Malcolm Grant both had offers from Hinds Community College and were to sign this morning.
“We look for Malcolm to sign with Hinds,” WC assistant coach Ross Coley said. “Hinds has also offered Austin Roberts a grayshirt deal. He’ll be able to go in and work out with the team. Justin Jones has a similar grayshirt deal with Mississippi Gulf Coast.”
A grayshirt is when a prospect delays his enrollment and signs with the school in the spring to count against next year’s class.
Wooten, the Region 4-1A Lineman of the Year, committed to sign with the Eagles last week and sent inhis paperwork this morning.
“They contacted me and wanted me as an offensive tackle,” Wooten said.
Central Hinds’ Hunter Farrior, a running back and linebacker, also planned to sign with Hinds CC this morning. Farrior rushed for 1,246 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2010, to go along with 79 tackles on defense.
Two of Farrior’s teammates, linemen Nick Mitchell and Austin Sills, planned to sign with Mississippi Delta.
One of the biggest signing day surprises was the lack of offers for Porters Chapel wide receiver Chris Marshall, the 2010 Vicksburg Post Player of the Year.
Marshall led Warren County in receiving with 50 catches for 1,029 yards and nine touchdowns. He also had six interceptions on defense. He had no plans to sign today, however.
“It’s been pretty quiet,” Marshall said last week. “I went for a visit to Belhaven and Mississippi College.”
Because Mississippi College is an NCAA Division III program, it cannot give athletic scholarships. Financial aid from the school comes in the form of academic, leadership and Pell Grants.
Marshall, who had an outstanding senior year at PCA after transferring from Sugarland, Texas, turned down a shot with Hinds.
“The Marshall kid was invited to visit, but he didn’t show up,” Hinds assistant coach Kelly Murphy said.
Hinds could pick up another PCA product, though. Jake Boyd, an athlete who played receiver and linebacker for the Eagles, was weighing an offer. He did not plan to sign today, however.
If Marshall doesn’t go to Mississippi College, the Choctaws could still land a Warren County product. Vicksburg High wide receiver Milan Nasif was considering an offer from MC.
Nasif was the county’s fourth leading receiver with 36 receptions for 401 yards, and four touchdowns. He set the single-game Warren County record for receptions, with 14 against Northwest Rankin.
“They offered and I think he fits Coach Joseph’s scheme in a great way,” Vicksburg coach Alonzo Stevens said.
Nasif’s teammate, Namonta Gaines, has decided to end his football career. The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder, who doubled at both tight end and defensive end for the Gators, had an offer from Louisiana-Lafayette but will instead enroll at Mississippi State in the fall and not play football.
“Louisiana-Lafayette offered Namonta early, but he wants to go to Mississippi State and just go to school,” Stevens said.
The Gators could have another signee if East Mississippi Community College offers defensive end Kederrick Parsons.
Hinds wide receivers Cordell Valentine and Les Lemons have already signed their new deals at the senior college level. Valentine, a Warren Central product, signed with Tarleton State, an NCAA Division II program in Stephensville, Texas. Valentine caught 18 passes for 453 yards and six touchdowns last season.
Lemons, a Vicksburg High product, signed with Arkansas-Monticello, a member of the Gulf South Conference. Lemons caught 35 passes for 350 yards for Hinds last season.
Hinds offensive tackle Danny Bunch, who played at Warren Central, was still undecided, but will likely sign today.
