A Vicksburg man who led police on a high-speed chase through a residential neighborhood and wrecked his pickup went from the hospital to the Warren County Jail Wednesday night, charged with felony eluding.

Marvin Reed, 30, 210 Easy St., was arrested at 10:10 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near the Mission 66 overpass, police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

A patrolman attempted to stop Reed, whom Stewart said was the driver of a 2004 Dodge Ram, at Cherry and China streets. The patrolman saw a bottle of Seagram’s gin thrown from the pickup’s window, said the lieutenant.

When Reed did not stop, a chase ensued south on Cherry to Clay Street and wound west to Monroe Street, north to Jackson Street and then east to Openwood, which becomes MLK Boulevard.

“It appears speeds of up to 70 miles per hour were reached,” Stewart said. “The truck turned on its side when Reed crossed Mission and tried to negotiate the steep curve near the basketball courts.”

Reed was treated and released from River Region Medical Center, said hospital spokesman Allen Karel.

Stewart said Reed was then booked into the Warren County Jail, where he was being held without bond this morning pending his initial appearance in court on the eluding charge Friday. Reed was also cited for traffic violations.

Three passengers in the pickup were taken to the police station but released without charges, Stewart said.

It was not known why Reed, who had been arrested and released on a misdemeanor charge hours earlier, fled the traffic stop, Stewart said.
