Fresh off winning a North State boys title for the first time since 1996, the Vicksburg Gators now face a nine-day layoff until a March 2 date with Pascagoula in the Class 6A state tournament.

Gators coach Dellie C. Robinson said after his team’s 74-59 win over Starkville that he welcomed the break.

“We need that break,” Robinson said. “When you play six, and after the week they’ve had, you need a break.”

Vicksburg (26-3) reeled off three straight North State playoff wins, but all three were tough games.

In the satellite game Tuesday against Grenada, the Gators had to withstand a barrage of 14 3-pointers to beat the Chargers 83-72. Grenada had pulled to within four points late in the fourth quarter before Vicksburg responded with a 6-0 run to escape.
